Better Biking in Lakewood!

BikeLakewood's mission is to serve the interests of residents and non-residents who want to cycle in Lakewood. We hope that by doing so we'll also be serving Lakewood's business community. To accomplish this we will....
  • Make sure that Lakewood designs its streets for equal access by cyclists.
  • Help provide bike parking in Lakewood's business districts and at our major destinations
  • Help Lakewood cyclists young and old learn safe cycling.
  • Encourage Lakewood residents and outsiders to cycle (and spend money) in Lakewood.
  • Encourage our motorists to "share the road."
  • Work to improve Lakewood's municipal ordinances on behalf of cyclists.
  • Find road hazards and encourage the city to repair them.
  • Use Lakewood-specific information outlets to get our message out.
We want you to join us in this effort.  Please contact us if you can help.

Other Advocacy Organizations

There are many regional and national cycling advocacy organizations that promote safe and enjoyable cycling. Some are listed below.

ClevelandBikes - ClevelandBikes promotes cycling in Northeast Ohio through advocacy and education.  ClevelandBikes is working to help secure funding for the last six miles of the Towpath Trail.  ClevelandBikes also designates the last Friday of every month as Bike to Work Day, and provides ride leaders from many communities including Lakewood.  ClevelandBikes produces the monthly CrankMail newsletter. BikeLakewood encourages you to become a member of this excellent organization.

Ohio Bicycle Federation - The Ohio Bicycle Federation seeks to improve Ohio bicycling through legislation, education and sharing ideas.  The OBF was instrumental in the June, 2006 passage of the Better Bicycling in Ohio bill.  Also known as House Bill 389, this legislation makes Ohio laws regarding cycling conform more closely with the Uniform Vehicle Code.  HB 389 also invalidates most out-of-date municipal ordinances and eliminates many conflicting ordinances.

The OBF also runs the Cyclist Friendly Communities Program.  This program includes a complete toolkit for improving cycling conditions in communities like Lakewood and administers a "cyclist friendly" award program. BikeLakewood encourages Lakewood city officials to consider becoming an OBF Cyclist Friendly Community. The Ohio Bicycle Federation is another excellent organization we encourage you to join.

Ohio City Bike Co-op - OCBC is a non-profit, volunteer-driven cooperative bicycle education center. Its Earn a Bike program takes donations of used bikes and helps children earn one for themselves while learning bike repair and safe cycling. Surplus bikes are fully refurbished for sale to support the program. For adults, OCBC offers repair classes as well as the League of American Bicyclist's Bike Ed program. You can check the Bike Ed schedule here. Safe social rides leave from the shop every Saturday at 10 AM, where you can informally learn safe urban cycling. OCBC is a rather unusual place. The shop is located on the Cuyahoga River in the Flats, and is teeming with used bikes and bike parts.

League of American Bicyclists - Formerly known as the League of American Wheelmen, the League of American Bicyclists promotes bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation, and works through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America.  The League currently boasts a membership of 300,000 affiliated cyclists, including 40,000 individuals and 600 affiliated organizations.  The League offers safety and education programs, and bicycle advocacy programs.  The League also organizes National Bike Month (May).
